The COVID-19 lockdown period had a profound impact on young learners' education, with many struggling to maintain their literacy skills due to the disruption in their learning. This was a concern that I shared as a student myself, which is why I chose to implement the "Bring-and-Borrow Honesty Library" as my social-action project. I believe that having access to books is crucial for promoting a love of reading and improving literacy skills. When I discussed my idea with the principal, she was very supportive and mentioned that the school did not have its own library. She was enthusiastic about the idea of me doing something centred around boosting literacy, and I felt that an honesty library would be a great way to help students access books and reignite their passion for reading.

Implementing an honesty library system at my host school had a positive impact on student literacy. By giving students more agency and responsibility over their reading choices, the honesty library system promoted a love for reading and a sense of ownership over their education. I observed that students were more engaged in their reading and were more motivated to select books that interested them. Additionally, the honesty library system promoted a culture of trust and respect among students, which created a positive and safe learning environment. Students were able to share and discuss their reading choices with their peers, which further enhanced their literacy skills and promoted a sense of community. Overall, the honesty library system was a success in promoting student literacy and creating a positive learning environment at my host school.

However, it should be noted that collecting books for the honesty library proved to be extremely challenging. Despite my efforts to request donations from the local community and school families, I was unable to acquire any additional books beyond the initial few I had collected. This made it difficult to sustain the system in the long term and limited the range of reading choices available to students.

Despite the initial difficulties in collecting books for the honesty library, I was fortunate to receive a stroke of luck from a friend who is also a teacher. She had recently replaced her school's book options and generously donated their old books to my cause. This was a significant boost to the honesty library system as it greatly expanded the range of reading choices available to students. With this additional donation, students were able to explore different genres and

authors, and were more engaged in their reading. Furthermore, it demonstrated the importance of community support and collaboration in promoting student literacy.

The honesty library system became a success not just because of my efforts, but also through the generosity of others. I am grateful for this experience and look forward to implementing similar systems in the future to continue promoting a love for reading and lifelong learning among students.
